The golf ball that made golfers too good

Golf’s distance debate, explained.

These days, pro golfers are hitting the ball far. Really far. And it’s creating a problem: because modern golfers can reach the hole with fewer shots than before, older courses — like Augusta National Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, and others — are becoming obsolete. Now, professional organizations, like the United States Golf Association, are struggling to find a solution for big powerful golfers like Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods. While the jump in distance is due to lots of factors, conversation is centering on the controversial possibility of redesigning the golf ball to reduce distance. It’d be the latest turn in the ball’s long history: Golf balls have evolved from “featheries,” to gutties, to balata balls, and eventually dimpled modern balls. But the biggest, and most recent change? The almost-instantaneous switch from wound balls to solid core multilayer balls like the Titleist Pro V1.

  1. Happy Friday everyone, thanks for watching our vidyas!

  2. Aren't all golf balls made like that cause I cut one open and it's was multi layered

  3. VOX, why worry about golf balls that make every player better? There is no discrimination in golf. All players have the right to use the Pro V1. You compete against other players, not the course. So even if everyone hits the ball further and sticks it closer to the pin, they still have to have the best score. Nuff said!

  4. Thats just pythagorean theorem that Bubba did, he just chose c squared, quick maths loool

  5. just change it instead of a golf club hit has to be hit with a wiffle bat.

  6. The sport evolves, players get better. Adding rules to roll back advances in technology instead of adapting the game to suit it would be a mistake.

TL;DR: You ultimately just need bigger golf courses, taking up more space. Literally the only difference, as everything would just need to be scaled up.

  8. There is a question of sustainability involved here. As players hit further and further then the courses have to get longer and longer and use more land. This uses more fertilizer, water, and lawn mowers to maintain. In short, we should limit the flight of golf balls for the Earth.

  13. This is expensive, but they could always update courses to go with the innovation of the new golf balls

  14. This video was literally fkn everywhere in my feed

  15. Hey thurnis? Why you love to golf?

  16. Fitness drove it equally if not more in 1997 when tiger won the masters he blew the field out of the water because he hit it further. This caused the golding world to take fitness and swing changes seriously, it was a compounding effect. Now most golfers work out like baseball players and pro football athletes.
